Café Mulé Midnight Mule Coffee Review

This coffee is fairly unique. For starters, it is roasted in Boise, Idaho - where I live. I love supporting local businesses, especially when it is delicious coffee. Because it is a locally roasted coffee, they also offer free delivery to the greater Boise area (Meridian included), but will deliver anywhere in the United States. So, for those of you living outside Boise, you can still try this coffee.

ABOUT

Midnight Mule is a dark roast coffee - a roast that I am slowly starting to completely appreciate and crave. I have long been a fan of medium roast coffee, but there is something almost enchanting about the marriage of robust, smoky flavors and a splash of cream.

According to the Café Mulé website, the “Midnight Mule is a smooth drinking coffee with an extra roasty kick.  Perfect for the dark coffee lover's morning cup or to pair with after dinner cheesecake.”

I found this coffee locally while doing some grocery shopping at the new Market Street Albertson’s, and I am glad I purchased a few bags.

Purchasing a bag of this coffee also helps support trail maintenance for the vast system of outdoor trails just outside Boise.

Uniquely, this coffee is actually served on the trail FOR FREE to members of the community - it is actually how this coffee business started.

Back in 2016, the owner offered his first batch of free coffee. Since then, it has changed slightly, but he can now carry six gallons of cold brew onto the trail with him, using his trusty Mule. In warmer months, he offers cold brew, and once it starts cooling down, he heats up the coffee on a small stove.

REVIEW

The coffee is surprisingly nice. It is smoother than I had expected, with a great array of flavors common to dark roasts - smoke, wood, with a hint of brown sugar and vanilla.

I would not go as far as to say that this is a phenomenal dark roast that everyone needs to try in their life. However, it is a solid dark roast coffee, locally roasted, and involved in the sustainable maintenance of some of Boise’s trails. That is pretty cool.

I sampled this coffee using my French Press as well as my Brevile espresso machine (seriously the best espresso machine for the cost). I created a few lattes, iced coffee drinks as well as an adffogato (wow AF).

I am still uncertain how I feel about running into a mule on the trail and its rider serving cold brew, but as for the coffee - not bad.
